Esophageal Manometry and Esophageal pH Probe Testing

Esophageal Manometry

Esophageal Manometry involves inserting a small, flexible tube through the nose into the esophagus and stomach in order to measure pressures and function of the esophagus.

This procedure is performed in a hospital setting. You should have nothing to eat or drink for approximately 6 hours before the procedure. During the procedure, you will be sitting up. A thin plastic tube is passed through the nose into the esophagus. Readings are taken of esophageal function after small amounts of water are swallowed. The tube is then removed.

Esophageal pH Probe Testing

After Esophageal Manometry is performed, the physician may then continue with an Esophageal pH Probe Testing which involves inserting a small, flexible tube through the nose into the esophagus and stomach in order to measure the degree of acid reflux into the esophagus. The tube remains in place for 24 hours, at which time you return to the hospital or physician's office for removal.
